Recently, the renowned non-profit automotive trade organization, the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG), has announced a significant expansion of its presence in Asia, with a focus on strengthening the automotive supply chain in China. As part of this strategic move, AIAG is establishing a representative office in Shanghai, marking a major step forward in its efforts to support the growing automotive industry in the region.
To lead this initiative, AIAG has appointed Dr. Chen Yilong, a respected figure and pioneer in the U.S. automotive industry who has played a key role in advancing automotive standards and practices in China. Dr. Chen will serve as the General Manager for AIAG’s Asia Pacific operations and as the Chief Representative in China. His extensive experience and deep understanding of both the American and Chinese automotive markets make him an ideal leader for this important role.
AIAG, which counts major automakers such as DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor, and General Motors, along with numerous parts suppliers, among its members, has been actively expanding its global footprint. These companies are increasingly investing in China, driven by the country's strong demand for vehicles and its growing manufacturing capabilities. At the same time, Chinese OEMs and auto parts suppliers are looking to enhance their quality control systems and improve their ability to export products internationally.
Dr. Chen Yilong, one of the first generation of AIAG members in China, has long been recognized for his contributions to the industry. In 1999, he was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a testament to his expertise and leadership in engineering and innovation. With his appointment, AIAG is reinforcing its commitment to fostering collaboration, improving standards, and supporting sustainable growth in the Chinese automotive sector.
