According to Platts, Romanian energy giant Petrom has shut down its 20,000-ton-per-year acrylonitrile (ACN) plant No. 1 at Arpechim on May 2. The closure came after the facility failed to meet upcoming EU environmental regulations.
A Petrom spokesperson confirmed that the ACN unit, which was commissioned in 1969, would require significant capital investment to comply with new environmental standards set to take effect next year. The company determined that the economic return from continuing operations wouldn’t justify such a large expenditure. As a result, the decision was made to permanently close the unit.
Following the shutdown, the equipment will undergo cleaning and decontamination before being dismantled and removed. This move aligns with Petrom’s broader strategy to modernize its operations and ensure compliance with evolving environmental policies across Europe.
In addition to the closed ACN plant, Petrom still operates a second 60,000-ton/year ACN unit and a 75,000-barrel-per-day refinery at the same site. The company is reportedly evaluating the long-term viability of these facilities as well, considering the increasing regulatory and operational pressures in the region.
This development highlights the growing challenges faced by older industrial assets in meeting modern environmental expectations, especially in the EU, where sustainability and emissions reduction are top priorities.
