Liaoyuan City, located in Jilin Province, once thrived as a coal-dependent city but now faces the challenge of resource depletion. In response, the city has shifted its focus toward developing high-tech new materials, successfully driving industrial transformation and achieving remarkable growth. Since the start of this year, major economic indicators have shown an impressive growth rate exceeding 20%, signaling a promising future.
Once known as a coal hub, Liaoyuan struggled economically as its coal reserves dwindled. Three years ago, the city introduced the concept of "seeking opportunities in high-end markets" and launched a strategic development plan that emphasized "leading with new materials, developing the health industry, and upgrading traditional competitive industries." This shift has brought about a significant turnaround, opening up new pathways for sustainable growth.
One of the key players in this transformation is Liaoyuan Deheng Co., Ltd., which specializes in differentiated synthetic fibers. By the end of last year, the company was producing 30,000 tons of polyester, 5,000 tons of polypropylene, and spandex annually. It has become the largest producer of polyester filaments and the sole manufacturer of spandex in Northeast China. Another success story is Liaoyuan Midas Aluminium Co., Ltd., which produces high-grade aluminum materials used in subway cars, high-speed trains, and light rail systems. Within three years of entering the EU market, their products passed rigorous quality assessments, showcasing the city's growing industrial capabilities.
Liaoyuan also tackled environmental challenges by addressing the issue of coal gangue, which had accumulated to over 80 million tons. To make use of this waste material, the city invested more than 400 million yuan to build a modern cement plant. The facility, built on the foundation of a small existing plant, now produces 50 million tons of cement clinker annually and contributes 20 million yuan in tax revenue each year. This initiative not only reduces environmental impact but also boosts the local economy.
Through innovation, smart resource utilization, and strategic industrial development, Liaoyuan has transformed itself from a declining coal city into a dynamic hub for advanced manufacturing and sustainable growth.
