Small plane slides off the runway at Chicago Executive Airport 4-2-20

At approximately 7 PM on Thursday evening (April 2, 2020), both Wheeling and Prospect Heights firefighters and police were dispatched to the scene of a reported plane crash at the Chicago Executive Airport. The air traffic control tower had initially alerted emergency responders that a small aircraft, carrying one individual onboard, had made an emergency landing. However, instead of safely coming to rest on the runway, the plane ended up partially submerged in a drainage ditch alongside it, partially filled with about two feet of water. Upon arrival, the Wheeling Battalion 24 quickly assessed the situation and found the pilot to be in good condition and unharmed. There were no immediate hazards detected, and the pilot was able to exit the plane without assistance. After signing a medical release form at the scene, the pilot was cleared to leave, having suffered no injuries during the incident. Meanwhile, only the local firefighting units were kept on-site while other responding agencies were released from the scene. One fire company remained on standby as a wrecker was brought in to retrieve the plane, a Cessna Skyhawk, from the ditch where it had come to rest. The aircraft was successfully removed without further complications, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the fire department and the wrecker crew. Photos taken by Larry Shapiro show the plane partially submerged and the subsequent removal process, along with images of various emergency vehicles, including a Freightliner ambulance and Rosenbauer America's IHC/Timberwolf apparatus, which were present at the scene. The quick response and efficient handling of the situation by the first responders ensured that there were no serious consequences from the incident. The Chicago Executive Airport, known for its role as a key regional aviation hub, remains operational after this minor mishap, which serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures even in smaller airports.
