Working fire in Chicago, 2-21-22

I just got back from covering a massive scrap yard fire that broke out on Monday at 4430 West 14th Street. Engine 103 was the first unit on the scene because they were responding to a carbon monoxide call at a nearby house while Engine 38 was busy handling another fire on the 1400 block of Avers Avenue. Engine 113 quickly joined the effort, going into line to supply water to Engine 103 and Squad 1 so they could start knocking down the blaze. The companies actively involved in this incident included Engine 103 and Engine 113, along with Truck 19 and Truck 26 for support. Squad 1 also pitched in, alongside Battalion Chief 18. The overall command structure was coordinated under 2-2-4. It was quite an intense situation, especially with all the scrap metal piled up creating additional challenges for the firefighters. While I was there, I managed to capture some photos of the scene. Unfortunately, the images didn’t upload properly earlier, but here’s what I saw. The flames were really aggressive, spreading quickly through the piles of scrap. You can see how the firefighters worked tirelessly, setting up their lines and doing everything they could to control the fire before it spread further. I’ve attached a few of the better shots below. They don’t do justice to the scale of the operation, but you get a sense of the chaos and dedication of the Chicago Fire Department.
