Small plane slides off the runway at Chicago Executive Airport 4-2-20

Late Thursday evening on April 2nd, 2020, just before 7 PM, emergency services including firefighters from both Wheeling and Prospect Heights as well as local police were dispatched to the Chicago Executive Airport following reports of a plane crash. The control tower immediately informed responding units that a small aircraft, containing a single occupant, had made an emergency landing. However, instead of safely coming to rest on the runway, the plane ended up partially submerged in a drainage ditch adjacent to it, with approximately two feet of water enveloping its undercarriage. Upon arrival, the Wheeling Battalion 24 quickly assessed the situation. They discovered that the pilot, who was found to be in good health and not in any immediate danger, was still inside the aircraft. No hazardous materials or conditions were detected at the scene. The pilot managed to exit the plane unassisted and signed a medical release form right there, indicating they did not require further medical attention. While some emergency units were kept on standby, others were released due to the lack of significant risk or injury. A single fire crew remained on site as a recovery team arrived with a wrecker to extract the downed aircraft—a Cessna Skyhawk—from the ditch. Throughout the incident, communication between emergency responders and airport authorities was smooth, ensuring minimal disruption to airport operations. Photos taken by Larry Shapiro captured moments from the scene, showing the aircraft partially submerged and various emergency vehicles positioned strategically around the area. The event served as a reminder of the importance of safety measures at smaller airports like Chicago Executive, where incidents, though rare, can occur with potentially serious consequences. Fortunately, in this case, the outcome was favorable thanks to prompt response efforts and the pilot’s ability to self-evacuate safely. As the cleanup continued into the night, it was clear that coordination among different agencies played a crucial role in managing the aftermath efficiently.
