It was around 4:45 AM on Sunday (December 23) when Engine 75 arrived at the scene of a fire on 117th Street and LaSalle Avenue. The initial report described it as a fire in a two-and-a-half-story wooden building. Just moments later, Battalion 22 requested a formal response and mentioned that flames were spreading through two structures. Firefighters quickly discovered a significant amount of fire in the attic of the wooden building, making forced entry challenging. However, with determination, they managed to break through and access the attic. Once inside, they worked tirelessly to extinguish the blaze before it could escalate further.
The images captured by Eric Haak offer a glimpse into the intensity of the situation. In one photo, you can see firefighters battling the flames at the site, their efforts clearly focused on containing the fire. Another image shows Engine 62 responding to the emergency, highlighting the rapid mobilization required in such scenarios. Other photos depict firefighters working on the roof and conducting overhauling operations in the attic post-fire, ensuring all potential hazards are eliminated.
This incident serves as a reminder of the dedication and bravery exhibited by first responders who face unpredictable challenges every day. Their swift action prevented what could have been a much larger disaster, protecting both property and lives in the process.
