I just witnessed something incredible unfold! Around 10:15 this morning, an IMPD drone got stuck on top of a construction crane downtown during its overnight operations. Instead of panicking, the #IFD Tactical Team saw it as a golden opportunity to practice their high-angle rope skills, which they don't get to use often enough.
Lt. Erik Baynard, who's SPRAT-certified (Society of Professional Rope Access Technician), led the mission with Private Ryan Cundiff as his backup. We couldn't have asked for better conditions - the wind was calm at only 3 mph, and the crane supervisor was super cooperative.
They shut off the crane's generator and secured everything before starting the climb around 11:25 AM. The mast is 130 feet tall, with the jib extending another 160 feet. The drone was about 12 feet from the tip of the jib. Baynard reached the jib at 11:33 and made the tricky transition to the top by 11:45. He found the drone at 12:23 PM after some careful maneuvering. It wasn't undamaged - there was some minor damage, but nothing major. They got it down safely by 12:33.
The whole retrieval took until 1:26 PM, but it was worth it. These kinds of drills don't come around often, and it's great practice for situations where human lives could be at risk. I've attached some photos from the scene - you can really see the scale of the operation.
It's moments like these that remind me why I'm so proud to support our local firefighters. They're always finding ways to turn challenges into chances to improve.
