For this partnership to proceed, Mundelein must successfully sell, lease, or trade their existing ladder truck.

Libertyville Fire Chief Rich Carani noted that discussions around such collaborative efforts have been ongoing for roughly two years, driven by budgetary constraints and a push to maximize taxpayer value. Ladder trucks typically enjoy longer operational lifespans compared to standard fire engines due to less mileage, but acquiring a new one still costs well over $1 million.
Public Safety Director Eric Guenther emphasized the financial prudence of sharing large, expensive equipment like ladder trucks. Libertyville's current vehicle, now 18 years old, could potentially see its lifespan extended by another decade through refurbishment, which would be significantly cheaper than purchasing a brand-new model. Additionally, Libertyville's proximity to Mundelein’s main high-rise buildings and key commercial areas offers logistical advantages in emergency response scenarios.
