I was scrolling through my social media feed when I came across this fascinating story shared on the Indianapolis Fire Department's Facebook page. It’s one of those rare moments where an unexpected situation turned into a fantastic training opportunity for emergency responders. Here’s what happened:
Around 10:15 AM, an unmanned drone operated by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) somehow got stuck on top of a construction crane during its nighttime operations. This could have been a tricky situation, but instead of panicking, the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) Tactical Team 7C decided to turn this mishap into a chance for some impromptu high-angle rope/crane training. They called it an "opportunity," which really shows their resourcefulness.
High-angle rope rescue training isn’t easy—it’s dangerous, technically complex, requires heavy-duty equipment, and needs constant practice to stay sharp. Believe it or not, situations involving cranes happen more often than you’d think. Fortunately, today’s exercise involved saving a piece of pricey equipment rather than human lives.
Under Lieutenant Ben Roberts’ leadership, Lieutenant Erik Baynard—certified by the Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians (SPRAT)—led the rescue effort with Private Ryan Cundiff as his backup. The IFD team coordinated with TWG Construction, who were working on the site that’s set to become the Rise on Meridian apartments, housing 269 units. The construction team was super cooperative and gave them permission to retrieve the drone.
Once they shut off and locked out the crane’s generator for safety, the two firefighters began their ascent. The mast stood at 130 feet tall, with the articulating jib extending another 160 feet. The drone was about 12 feet away from the end of the jib. With the wind blowing at a gentle 3 mph, the crane’s weathervane mode wasn’t expected to cause any major issues for the climbers.
The climb began at 11:25 AM. While Cundiff stayed below the jib as backup, Baynard reached the jib at 11:33 AM. He completed the challenging transition to the top of the jib by 11:45 AM. At 11:56 AM, Baynard informed command that he’d reached the end of the crane’s safety cable and would use the fall protection system he brought along. The first transition on the jib was achieved at 12:06 PM, and the drone was finally retrieved at 12:23 PM. By 12:33 PM, the drone was safely back on the ground. The climbers descended starting at 12:38 PM and were both safely back on the ground by 1:26 PM.
Surprisingly, the drone suffered only minor damage, which should be relatively easy to repair so it can return to duty.
I’m always impressed by how well-prepared these teams are and how they manage to find learning opportunities even in unforeseen circumstances. Kudos to the IFD Tactical Team for turning this situation into a valuable training experience!
P.S. The photos below show some incredible visuals of the entire operation. Props to the IFD photographers for capturing these moments!
[Here, I'd insert some captions or comments on the photos if they were visible, keeping the tone conversational and relatable.]
