Northbrook house fire 9-23-11

It was just after 7:30 AM on a Friday when the Northbrook Fire Department got multiple calls about thick smoke billowing from a vacant house located at 1017 Shermer Road. By the time the first emergency vehicles arrived, they discovered that the smoke was coming from a basement fire inside the ranch-style home. The situation was quickly escalated to a Code 4, indicating an active fire, which prompted mutual aid support from neighboring departments in Glencoe and Northfield. Following the successful extinguishing of the flames, an investigator's box alarm was activated to bring in additional fire investigators from surrounding Division 3 areas to help determine the exact cause of the blaze. Tim Olk, who arrived with the initial response team, managed to capture several photos of the scene during the operation. The first image shows Northbrook firefighters arriving at the scene, immediately recognizing the urgency of the situation. As they entered through the front door, they soon realized that the fire was originating from the basement. Smoke filled the air, making visibility nearly impossible, but their training kicked in as they worked diligently to control the situation. In the second photograph, firefighters can be seen working against time to ventilate the roof while another crew focuses on removing the front door. Their coordinated efforts highlight the teamwork necessary in such high-pressure scenarios. A third image captures the intense moment when one of the truck companies prepares to leave the roof area. Simultaneously, a hose is directed through the basement window in an attempt to directly suppress the fire. This strategic move demonstrates the adaptability required in firefighting operations. Tim has since shared a full gallery of these impactful images, providing further insight into the challenging conditions faced by the Northbrook Fire Department that day. Each photo tells its own story of resilience and professionalism under pressure, capturing not only the physical demands of the job but also the unwavering dedication of those who risk everything to protect others.
