Larry Shapiro recently shared some updates about the Winnetka Fire Department's ambulance fleet. According to him, there’s a brand-new ambulance unit in town. This one, labeled as Ambulance 28, marks quite an interesting milestone—it’s reportedly the penultimate unit ever built by Medtec before they ceased operations. This particular vehicle features a Type I design mounted on a 2012 IHC 4300 chassis and carries Medtec shop order number 26264-1.
I had the chance to snap a few photos of this impressive rig, showcasing its sleek build and professional appearance. As you can see in the images, the ambulance boasts a clean, modern look with black accents adorning the top of both the box and the cab roof. This color scheme gives it a more contemporary feel compared to its predecessors.
In addition to the new arrival, the department also recently rebranded another of their units, now designated as Ambulance 28R. This one is a slightly older model, a 2007 Type I Medtec ambulance mounted on a Freightliner M2106 chassis. A small “R†next to the number 28 clearly distinguishes it from its counterpart. For those keeping track, the previous unit to hold the 28R designation—a 2000 Type I Road Rescue on a Freightliner FL70 chassis—was sold off to the Antioch Fire Department.
