I just got back from capturing some incredible images at a fire that broke out at a townhouse on 4500 South Ellis in Chicago on January 28, 2017. The smoke was absolutely overwhelming, billowing thickly from the roof and spreading across the entire area. It was quite a scene to witness, and I wanted to share more of what I saw with these photos.
The first shot really captures the intensity of the situation—thick plumes of smoke rising dramatically from the rooftop of the burning townhouse. You can almost feel the heat just by looking at it. This image was taken by my good friend Tim Olk, who’s always there when something big happens.
Switching gears slightly, another one of Tim's shots shows the firefighters working tirelessly to control the blaze. Their dedication is inspiring, especially when you see how they’re braving such intense conditions. It’s moments like these that remind us of their courage and commitment.
There’s also this powerful image of a firefighter standing alone after the firefight has concluded. His posture speaks volumes about the exhaustion and relief that comes with the job. It’s a poignant reminder of the toll these events take on everyone involved.
In another photo, we get a different perspective—one that focuses on the equipment and the sheer scale of the operation. Tower Ladder 37 is clearly doing its part to help contain the fire, which is something you don’t see every day unless you’re around during an emergency.
Lastly, there’s a shot of several firefighters gathered together after the fire has been brought under control. They look spent but proud, knowing they’ve done their best to protect the community. These men and women deserve all the respect in the world for putting themselves on the line like this.
All in all, it was a harrowing experience being there, but it’s always rewarding to document moments like these. Hopefully, these images give people a sense of just how dramatic and challenging such situations can be. Big thanks to Tim for letting me share his work here today!
