CFD HIT 5-1-1 apparatus

I just came across an interesting thread discussing the evolution of the Chicago Fire Department's (CFD) Hazardous Incident Team apparatus, specifically the 5-1-1 unit. It's fascinating to see how much it's changed over the years. I've gathered some images that really capture these transformations. One of the earliest photos shows a 1979 Chevy Stepvan (G-418), which was initially used by the Emergency Preparedness & Disaster Services before it became part of the full-time hazmat team. This unit had the identifier 4-7-5 and played a key role in early hazardous materials response. The image is courtesy of Bill Friedrich's collection. Fast forward to the early 1970s, and we see Flying Squad 4 operating with a 1970 Mack MB/Platt vehicle. Interestingly, this exact unit was later reassigned to become the foundation for HIT 5-1-1. Larry Shapiro captured this historical moment beautifully. Before the Flying Manpower Squad 1 officially transitioned into the 5-1-1 role, it underwent a significant repaint. A photograph from Bill Friedrich’s collection highlights this squad before its transformation, showcasing the original look of the vehicle. The next milestone came when the department acquired a 1970 Mack MB/Platt (G-306). Initially serving as Flying Manpower Squad 1, it was repurposed for the Hazardous Incident Team. This unit marked another important phase in the development of the hazmat response capabilities within the CFD. Larry Shapiro also documented another angle of the Mack/Platt unit, providing additional insight into its design and functionality during its time as part of the hazmat team. In 1990, the CFD took a significant step forward by purchasing a dedicated vehicle for the full-time HIT. This Spartan Gladiator/Saulsbury (G-492) became the first rig explicitly built for hazmat operations. Larry Shapiro’s photo captures this modernization effort perfectly. Today, the CFD operates two full-time Hazardous Incident Teams, each equipped with identical rigs. Karl Klotz’s image highlights one of these contemporary vehicles, demonstrating the current state-of-the-art equipment used in hazmat incidents. It’s incredible to see how far the department has come in terms of technology and preparedness. Each vehicle reflects not only advancements in firefighting but also the evolving needs of protecting the public from hazardous situations. These images tell a story of dedication and progress, making me proud to be part of such a storied organization.
