2-Alarm fire in Berwyn, 12-18-16

It’s been an intense day here in Berwyn following a two-alarm fire that broke out on Sunday (December 18, 2016), at around 1411 Highland Avenue. The photos below give you a glimpse into the chaos and the coordinated efforts of local firefighters to bring the situation under control. I’ve been scrolling through pictures taken by Steve Redick, who captured some stunning images of the incident. It was only about 45 minutes into the fire when these photos were snapped, and already there was a palpable sense of urgency. You can see the Berwyn Fire Department’s ladder trucks and engines hard at work, their lights flashing against the winter backdrop. The firefighters looked determined, even as the smoke filled the air. In addition to Steve Redick's contributions, County-Wide Fire Photography also sent over some incredible shots. Their collection features everything from Bedford Park FD’s snorkel rig to North Riverside FD’s fire truck. Each photo tells its own story of teamwork and resilience. One image shows a Berwyn fire engine parked neatly next to a hydrant, ready to draw water in the fight against the flames. Another highlights firefighters clad in heavy gear, braving the cold as they worked tirelessly to extinguish the blaze. What struck me most was how different departments came together to support each other. There’s a powerful moment in one photo where you see firefighters from Cicero FD and Berwyn FD side by side, operating pumps and hoses. The sheer scale of the operation is evident—tower ladders tower over buildings, and master streams spray water high into the sky. The aftermath speaks volumes too. A few photos show the charred remains of what was once an apartment building, serving as a somber reminder of the destruction left in the fire’s wake. Yet amidst all this, there’s a quiet pride in knowing that lives were likely saved thanks to the quick response and dedication of first responders. This incident really highlighted the importance of having well-trained, well-equipped teams like those in Berwyn, Cicero, and surrounding areas. As someone who has always admired firefighting culture, seeing these images just reinforces my respect for the sacrifices made daily by these brave men and women. If you're anything like me, you’ll spend a little time reflecting on these photos. They’re more than just visuals—they’re stories of courage, cooperation, and the unwavering commitment to public safety. I hope everyone involved is safe, and kudos to all the photographers who documented this event so vividly.
