The oil pumping unit, with its large hoe moving up and down slowly, is a classic image that comes to mind when people think of an oil field. As this machine slowly lifts oil from deep underground, it becomes a vital source of energy for modern life. However, the traditional pumping unit is not only slow in movement but also highly energy-consuming. In Daqing Oilfield alone, traditional pumping units consume as much as 600 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. But this is about to change, thanks to the "three-dimensional permanent magnet motor" developed by Zhejiang University. With its widespread use, the energy consumption of these units is expected to drop by 50%, significantly reducing power usage and operational costs.
Professor Ye Yunyue, the inventor of the "three-dimensional permanent magnet motor" from Zhejiang University's School of Electrical Engineering, explains that traditional pumping units rely on complex mechanical systems, including large gearboxes, long beams, pulleys, and heavy hoes. These components are essential but inefficient. The new motor eliminates many of these intermediate parts, drastically reducing energy loss. According to studies, the reactive power loss of the new motor is reduced by 92.5%, and overall power consumption drops by more than 50%. Additionally, the improved design reduces the machine's footprint by nearly one mu (about 667 square meters), making it more space-efficient.
To understand how the "three-dimensional permanent magnet motor" works, we need to look at the difference between traditional motors and linear motors. In 1821, British scientist Michael Faraday demonstrated that electricity could be converted into rotational motion, leading to the development of DC and AC motors. These motors operate by rotating, which is ideal for applications like car engines or airplane propellers. However, for linear motion—such as the up-and-down movement of an oil pumping unit—traditional motors require additional mechanisms to convert rotation into linear movement. This conversion process introduces inefficiencies and energy losses. The "three-dimensional permanent magnet motor," on the other hand, directly produces linear motion without the need for gears or pulleys, making it far more efficient and reliable. This innovation marks a significant step forward in oil extraction technology, offering a greener and more cost-effective solution for the future.
