Last week, the Inner Mongolia Science and Technology Department announced that the Xinao Wujing gasification coal mining and methanol, methane, power generation cogeneration industrial pilot project is now producing 150,000 cubic meters of synthetic gas per day. The project has achieved a coal resource utilization rate exceeding 75%, marking a significant breakthrough in overcoming the challenges of lignite mining. This innovative approach not only enhances energy efficiency but also positions the production of combustible gas as a crucial resource for China’s chemical industry.
Lignite, a type of coal with a higher degree of coalification than peat, holds vast global reserves—over 1 trillion tons worldwide, with China alone holding 211.8 billion tons, and Inner Mongolia accounting for nearly 200 billion tons. However, due to its weak and unstable structure, traditional underground mining methods are often inefficient and risky. To address this issue, Hebei Xinao Gasification Coal Mining Group, in collaboration with China University of Mining and Technology, conducted extensive research and trials at the Gonggou coal mine in Wulanchabu, Inner Mongolia.
From April 18 to October 13, 2007, the team worked diligently for six months to establish an underground gasifier and a comprehensive ground system within a 1-square-kilometer experimental site. This included a gas collection system, initial purification and desulfurization units, and a sewage treatment facility, forming a complete gasification coal mining pilot base.
On October 22, 2007, the base was successfully ignited, producing underground gasification gas for the first time. This marked a milestone in China's independent development of pit-free underground gasification technology. According to continuous monitoring data, the project currently generates 150,000 cubic meters of syngas daily, with a calorific value of 800–1,000 kcal/m³. The produced combustible gas is becoming a vital resource for national chemical production.
The new Austrian-style gasification coal mining project has not only solved three key technical challenges but also made significant progress in areas such as gasification channel penetration and the control of continuous gasification process parameters using pure oxygen and steam. Additionally, the project has passed safety and environmental assessments by the National Puni Monitoring Center, meeting national environmental standards.
Currently, the Xinao Wujing gasification coal mining test has been included in the major scientific and technological projects of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Six of the technologies involved are now being patented, highlighting the project’s innovation and potential for future expansion.
