Israel uses seaweed to make biofuels

Israel's leading newspaper, Ha'aretz, recently reported on an innovative project by Israeli researchers aiming to harness seaweed and algae to produce biofuels as a sustainable energy solution. The initiative focuses on using marine plants to convert carbon emissions into usable fuel, offering a promising approach to reducing greenhouse gases. According to the report, scientist Isaac Burgen from Israel explained that seaweed has the potential to meet significant energy demands while simultaneously cutting down on carbon emissions. He elaborated: "The core concept of this technology involves capturing carbon dioxide from power plants and feeding it into an algae cultivation system. The carbon released from industrial processes and exhausts can serve as a nutrient for algae growth. As they multiply, they produce vegetable oil, which can then be processed into biofuel." Professor Mutih Hershkovis from Ben-Gurion University added that their research utilizes leftover fats from meat processing and plant-based oils to create biofuels. Unlike other biofuel options, which often require blending with traditional fuels, his team has developed a diesel-like fuel that can be used directly in vehicles. He stated, "What makes our product unique is that we’ve managed to remove oxygen from the oil, resulting in a fuel that closely resembles conventional diesel and can be used without modification." This breakthrough could mark a significant step forward in renewable energy, offering a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels and helping reduce environmental impact. With ongoing research and development, Israeli scientists are paving the way for a greener future.
