Mt Prospect house fire 6-23-11

In a neighborhood still recovering from heavy storm damage and without power two nights after a severe storm system swept through Mt. Prospect, a house fire broke out around 9 PM. Residents reported smoke coming from a ranch-style home at 601 N. Elmhurst Avenue, located four streets west of Elmhurst Road (Route 83), at the corner of West Highland Street. A series of photos captured the scene as firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control. The first image shows firefighters completing roof ventilation while others inspect the living room after the fire was declared under control. Larry Shapiro photo. Another photo highlights Tower 13, a Pierce Velocity unit, set up in front of the house on Highland Street, providing essential lighting for the crew working on the roof. Larry Shapiro photo. Engine 13 was positioned around the corner on Elmhurst Avenue with two lengths of LDH hose connected to a hydrant on the opposite side. Larry Shapiro photo. One image shows a problematic hydrant on the next block that could have caused challenges if the crews had encountered it. Larry Shapiro photo. Initial reports indicated a dog was inside the house, though the residents were not present. Engine 14 arrived just before Tower 13 and found fire venting from the east side of the structure. The call was upgraded to a Code 4, bringing in mutual aid units from Prospect Heights, Arlington Heights, and Des Plaines, along with additional company units covering the Mt. Prospect stations. Off-duty personnel brought the Mt. Prospect Squad to the scene to assist with air bottle refills. Larry Shapiro photo. The fire was quickly knocked down within 15 minutes, and out-of-town units were released shortly after. Throughout the neighborhood, tree limbs and debris from the recent storm lined both sides of the streets. Another photo captures the extensive storm damage visible overhead in the area. A large tree was seen lying across a hydrant near the fire scene, reminding crews to be cautious when searching for water sources. Larry Shapiro photo.
