Mt Prospect house fire 6-23-11

In a neighborhood still recovering from heavy storm damage and without power two nights after a severe storm system that brought a tornado through Mt. Prospect, a house fire was reported around 9 p.m. Neighbors spotted smoke coming from a ranch-style home at 601 N. Elmhurst Avenue, located four streets west of Elmhurst Road (Route 83) at the corner of West Highland Street. A team of firefighters arrived quickly, with Engine 14 on the scene moments before Tower 13. Upon arrival, they found fire venting from the east side of the house. The incident was upgraded to a Code 4, bringing in mutual aid units from Prospect Heights, Arlington Heights, and Des Plaines, as well as additional crews to cover the Mt. Prospect stations. Mt. Prospect Tower 13, a Pierce Velocity, was positioned in front of the house on Highland Street, providing critical lighting for firefighters working on the roof. Meanwhile, Mt. Prospect Engine 13 was stationed around the corner on Elmhurst Avenue, using two lengths of LDH hose to reach a hydrant on the opposite side of the street. Off-duty personnel were also mobilized, bringing the Mt. Prospect Squad to the scene to assist with filling air bottles for the firefighters. The fire was under control within 15 minutes, and out-of-town units were released shortly after. The scene showed signs of recent storm damage, with tree limbs and debris scattered across both sides of the streets. A large tree had fallen across a hydrant just a block away, reminding crews of the challenges they could have faced if this had been the nearest water source. Firefighters worked efficiently, completing roof ventilation while others inspected the living room after the fire was declared under control. The community remained on edge, as the area was still dealing with the aftermath of the storm, adding to the complexity of the emergency response. Throughout the neighborhood, overhead damage from the storm was clearly visible, with branches and other debris littering the streets. The combination of a recent tornado and a house fire created a tense and challenging situation for first responders and residents alike.
