2-Alarm fire in Sycamore, 12-16-16

This message is from Art Zern:

A fire broke out at the historic three-story Victorian, known as the "Boynton Mansion," built in 1886. A van was fully involved in a carport when the call came in. Upon arrival, heavy fire was spreading into the kitchen and both the first and second floors. The crew responded with a 2-11, and they managed to contain it well. Great job by the team.

Here are some excerpts from DailyChronicle.com:

Norm Mathisen noticed an unusual smell while doing carpentry work on Friday at the historic Charles O. Boynton House, located at 307 N. Main St. When he looked outside, he saw his van on fire.

The flames eventually spread from the carport where the van was parked to all three floors of the iconic Sycamore home. Firefighters from over a dozen local departments spent about three hours containing the blaze.

Mathisen, owner of DeKalb-based Norm’s Custom Hardwood Flooring, said he didn’t notice anything wrong with the van when he returned from his lunch break around 12:30 p.m. He claimed the fire was still limited to the van when he called 911.

Sycamore Assistant Fire Chief Todd Turner mentioned that the 911 call came in at 12:52 p.m., reporting a burning van in the carport. By the time crews had control of the fire in the carport, flames had already spread throughout the house. To ensure full containment, firefighters had to remove walls and windows.

The mansion, an 8,000-square-foot Queen Anne-style red brick home, was designed by George O. Garnsey, who also built a similar structure in DeKalb. It remained in the Boynton family for over a century. Built in 1886 and costing $12,000 (equivalent to about $320,000 today), it has been a popular stop on local house tours.

Fighters from DeKalb, Maple Park, Elburn, Kirkland, Hinckley, Sugar Grove, Burlington, Genoa-Kingston, and Cortland assisted the Sycamore crew during the incident.

Thanks, Art.
