Greg was born on March 20, 1962, in the Calumet Region, to Henry and Alice (Simala) Melyon. A lifelong resident of the area, he graduated from Bishop Noll Institute in 1980 and was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Greg followed in his family's footsteps by becoming a firefighter, starting his career with the Gary Fire Department. He was selected to join Squad 2, one of the most respected and busiest rescue units in the country, responding to hundreds of emergency calls annually. His dedication and skill earned him recognition as one of the top firefighters in the field.

In the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, Greg joined a team of firefighters to support the FDNY in New York City. Over the course of his 27-year career, he rose through the ranks and eventually retired as Chief of Operations for the City of Gary. After retiring, he continued to serve by becoming a safety instructor at the BP Whiting Refinery, where he shared his deep knowledge of emergency response and safety protocols.

Greg was a proud member of IAFF Local 359, the 5-11 Club of Chicago, the Fire Buffs of Illinois, and a founding member of the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago. He had a passion for collecting fire apparatus memorabilia, photographs, and die-cast emergency vehicles. An avid traveler, he loved exploring new places and discovering local cuisine. His warmth, humor, and generosity touched the lives of everyone who knew him.
