The largest tire base in the west will be born

Chongqing, a city famous for its automobile and motorcycle industries, has long lacked a local tire manufacturing sector. This gap in the industrial chain has been an unavoidable "short leg," both in terms of industry completeness and the maturity of the auto and motorcycle sectors. However, this situation is about to change. On August 28 this year, the first batch of Chongqing-made "Double Money" tires will roll off the production line at Shuangqiao Industrial Park. As part of the city's "Industry No. 1 Project" launched this year, the facility is expected to produce 4 million all-steel radial tires and 20 million motorcycle tires annually. Not only will this meet the needs of 80% of local car and motorcycle manufacturers, but it will also position Chongqing as the largest tire production base in western China. The main project was recently completed just a few days before March 25. Shao Jiaming, Director General of Shuangqiang Group (Chongqing) Tire Manufacturing Co., Ltd., has been extremely busy coordinating all aspects of the operation to ensure a smooth completion of the project. On March 20, reporters visiting Shuangqiao Industrial Park observed that the plant, covering 400 mu, had already completed most of its main structures. On March 25, the main building was capped, and by August 28, the first batch of tires would be in trial production. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on September 28. Just a few months ago, the area was still empty and deserted. Now, over $60 million worth of imported production equipment has arrived, and the first "Double Money" tires made in Chongqing are expected to be born soon—three months ahead of schedule, according to Shao Jiaming. "This is more than just a milestone; it’s a breakthrough for Chongqing," he said. "Soon, the well-known Shanghai 'Double Money' brand will be produced right here in Chongqing." For years, the tire industry has remained a blank spot in a city known as the capital of automobiles and motorcycles. According to data from the Chongqing Municipal Economic Commission, in 2007, the city's auto output exceeded one million units, while motorcycle production had ranked first nationally for five consecutive years. Chongqing is now the largest automobile and motorcycle production base in China, with the industry serving as its primary economic pillar. In an interview, the municipal economic commissioner outlined the city's development plan: By 2010, the total sales value of the automobile and motorcycle industries is expected to reach 320 billion yuan. This includes 150 billion yuan from car production, 70 billion yuan from motorcycles, and 100 billion yuan from parts—half of which will come from auto and motorcycle components, with thermal power products accounting for 25 billion yuan. While the city is confident in its vehicle production and sales, the local parts industry still needs improvement. For example, among the 271 suppliers of Changan Automobile, only 47% are local companies. Similarly, for Qingling Automobile, only 38% are local, and for Chang'an Ford, the figure drops to 35%. The overall matching rate for auto parts in Chongqing is around 50%, with tires being almost entirely imported. This new tire factory is not just a step forward—it's a strategic move to strengthen the entire industrial chain and reduce dependency on external sources. With this project, Chongqing is finally taking its place in the tire industry, turning a long-standing weakness into a new strength.
