On the eve of National Day, the 5th member congress of the China General Machinery Industry Association was held in Kunming. Yan Yongbin, chief engineer of the China Federation of Machinery Industry and president of the association, highlighted during the meeting that with the rapid growth of key sectors like petrochemicals, power, steel, and coal, the general machinery manufacturing industry is entering a new phase of development.
According to recent data, the industry saw significant growth in the first half of the year, with total industrial output reaching 140.446 billion yuan—an increase of 34.32% compared to the same period last year. Sales revenue hit 135.627 billion yuan, up 34.27%, while export delivery value reached 24.897 billion yuan, showing a remarkable 48.04% rise. Sub-sectors such as pumps, valves, fans, and gas separation equipment also demonstrated strong performance, signaling positive momentum across the sector.
The industry’s progress has been driven by large-scale projects, particularly in petrochemical equipment. These systems require advanced technology, high integration, and strong interconnectivity, making them a true reflection of a nation’s overall equipment manufacturing capabilities. In recent years, under the guidance of the National Development and Reform Commission and through major engineering projects, efforts have led to notable achievements in localizing large petrochemical equipment. Projects like Daqing and Maoming Ethylene upgrades, along with successful domestic production of ethylene cracking gas compressors, mark significant steps forward.
Notable examples include the Shengu Group, which has made breakthroughs in producing key components for ethylene plants, including the "three machines" (crack gas, ethylene, and propylene compressors), previously reliant on imports. The group signed contracts for one-million-ton ethylene units in Tianjin and Zhenhai in 2007, showcasing growing domestic capability.
Other companies, such as Shaanxi Drum Group and Shenyang Gas Company, have also contributed to the localization effort, developing large axial-flow fans and hydrogen compressors that are now widely used in refining operations. Wuxi Compressor Co., Ltd. has entered the large-capacity reciprocating compressor market, further expanding domestic capacity.
In the field of air separation, Kaifeng Air Subsidiary Group achieved a milestone with the successful testing of its 40,000-class unit in Shandong, marking a breakthrough in localization. Hangzhou Oxygen Co., Ltd. also gained recognition when its bid for an ethylene cold box project was accepted at a lower cost than foreign offers, saving millions in expenses.
In nuclear power, companies like Shenyang Pump Plant have supplied critical components for nuclear facilities, while in thermal power, Henan-based Kaifeng High-Pressure Valve Co., Ltd. developed electric gate valves for ultra-supercritical units. Meanwhile, Sichuan Zigong High-Pressure Valve Co., Ltd. broke foreign monopolies by producing large-diameter pipeline ball valves for the West-East Gas Transmission project.
Beyond these areas, industries such as filters, vacuum equipment, and gas purification have also played vital roles in supporting nationalization efforts.
Despite these achievements, challenges remain. Deputy Director Huang Pei from the National Development and Reform Commission emphasized that while progress has been made, there is still room for improvement. Some domestic manufacturers lag behind international standards, and certain project units still prefer imported equipment due to lack of confidence or understanding. To address this, the government is focusing on strengthening policies, promoting collaboration, and ensuring that core technologies are mastered to avoid dependency on foreign suppliers.
Looking ahead, the goal is to achieve significant breakthroughs in the localization of major technological equipment during the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan†period, with clear implementation strategies targeting key sectors that impact economic security and industrial upgrading.
