China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation’s 701 Haiyue Company has successfully developed the country’s first domestic equipment featuring a 250-mm-diameter two-way cartridge valve, which was deployed in a key project aimed at enhancing system performance. Recently, the device passed user acceptance, marking a significant milestone in China's hydraulic control technology. This achievement builds on the earlier success of 704 Haiyue Company, which developed the hydraulic hoist system for the world’s largest shiplock—the Three Gorges Project Ship Lock. The development of the fluid return control valve group represents another successful step in the research and development of large and medium-sized electrohydraulic control systems.
The flush return control valve group utilizes a 250-mm two-way cartridge valve, which is double the size of the 125-mm valves used in the Three Gorges Permanent Ship Lock’s hydraulic hoist system. This advanced valve allows precise control over oil pressure, flow, and direction, enabling the forging hammer to perform free-fall and vertical lifting movements necessary for the forging process. As a critical component in the development of a 3,000-ton hydraulic block forging machine for Liaoyang Heavy Industry Group, the valve group demands high technical standards, rapid response times, and a high level of integration. With only a few domestic manufacturers capable of producing such components, this technology had previously been reliant on imports.
The 704 Hydraulics division has a long history in hydraulic system development. In fact, it was the first to develop and produce a two-way cartridge valve in the 1980s. Following its successful bid for the Three Gorges Permanent Ship Lock hydraulic hoist system, the system has operated reliably for 1,865 days. In early 2007, Haiyue Company took on the challenge of localizing supporting equipment for Liaoyang Heavy Industry Group, developing two sets of flushing return control valves. The project required delivery within three months, a tight timeline given that producing a standard 125-mm two-way cartridge valve typically takes one and a half months. As the first application of a 250-mm two-way cartridge valve, the project had no existing models or data to reference, making it a complex and high-stakes endeavor.
To meet the demanding schedule and technical requirements, Haiyue mobilized top engineers, managers, and experienced personnel from the hydraulic system manufacturing and debugging teams. Design, process, and production departments worked closely together, ensuring every stage—from ordering and procurement to inspection—was handled with precision and care. Through relentless effort, all key technologies were successfully overcome, and both sets of equipment were delivered on time, passing final acceptance. In addition, the 701 Haiyue Company’s two-way cartridge valve system has now established a full range of supporting capabilities, paving the way for future advancements in hydraulic control technology.
