On August 7, Daimler AG and Beijing Foton Motor Co., Ltd. signed a "Letter of Intent for Cooperation" in Beijing, marking the beginning of a strategic partnership in the commercial vehicle sector. The two companies plan to establish a joint venture both in China and globally, focusing on medium and heavy trucks. This collaboration is expected to open new opportunities for Daimler in emerging markets where high-end Mercedes-Benz trucks may be too expensive for local buyers.
If the joint venture moves forward, Daimler will leverage Foton’s existing platforms to offer more affordable truck options, allowing it to better compete in developing regions. While Mercedes-Benz has a strong reputation in the premium segment, its high pricing limits its reach in less developed markets. Instead of introducing Mercedes-Benz-based models, the joint venture will integrate Mercedes-Benz technology into Foton’s existing medium and heavy trucks, using the Auman brand exclusively.
This unique structure surprised many, as it deviates from traditional joint ventures. Foton’s spokesperson, Zhao Jingguang, described it as a “subversive†model, emphasizing the need to rethink conventional partnerships between Chinese and foreign firms. The collaboration also includes plans for Daimler to invest as a strategic partner in Foton, potentially expanding cooperation beyond trucks to include buses and other commercial vehicles.
Foton is currently evaluating its entire medium and heavy truck business under the Auman brand, with an estimated value of at least 2 billion yuan. Daimler will contribute cash in return, and the formal agreement is expected to be signed after government approval. The joint venture will not only serve as a production hub but also act as a global operational center, including R&D, supply chain management, and marketing.
Zhao added that Auman will become one of Daimler’s global commercial vehicle brands, positioned as a low-end alternative to Mercedes-Benz, rather than a direct competitor. However, ownership of the Auman brand remains with Foton. Despite this, some components, like the Mercedes-Benz MB OM457 engine, will still carry the Mercedes-Benz label to highlight the technological support behind the products.
The branding agreement was a major point of negotiation over the years. After multiple rounds of discussions since 2003, Foton successfully secured the right to use only the Auman brand. Analysts believe that Foton’s growing strength played a key role in this decision. However, some experts, like Qin Xuwen from Orient Securities, argue that without access to Mercedes-Benz’s core technology, the brand might not be used in the joint venture, to protect its image.
Daimler, which owns several truck brands and operates 35 plants worldwide, sold nearly 468,000 trucks in 2007. In the high-end market, it competes directly with Volvo. Meanwhile, Auman, launched in 2004, has made some progress but still lags behind industry giants like FAW and CNHTC in terms of brand recognition and technical innovation.
Looking ahead, the profitability of the joint venture remains uncertain. Past joint ventures in China have shown mixed results, and while Foton gains access to advanced technology, it may face challenges in balancing costs and profits. Analysts remain cautiously optimistic, noting that Daimler’s technological edge could provide long-term benefits.
In the short term, the joint venture will require time to adjust and improve product quality. However, with steady growth in China’s medium and heavy truck market—projected at 10% to 15% annually—there are promising opportunities. Additionally, the joint venture aims to expand globally, with plans to set up operations in Russia, South America, and other emerging markets.
Zhao emphasized that this partnership will help Foton overcome common barriers when entering foreign markets. As the joint venture progresses, it could significantly enhance Foton’s capabilities and market presence, though the road ahead will require careful planning and execution.
