On February 15, 2015, photographer Tim Olk captured a series of striking images from the scene of a major multi-vehicle collision on the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago. The incident occurred in the express lanes near North Avenue, where heavy snow and icy conditions led to a chaotic chain-reaction crash. According to reports, nearly 40 vehicles were involved, resulting in 59 medical refusals and 12 patients being transported to local hospitals.
The crash disrupted traffic for several hours, with officials from the Illinois State Police confirming that between 20 and 30 vehicles were caught in the accident. The incident took place in the inbound express lanes, stretching from North Avenue to the Ohio Street off-ramp. Authorities noted that the lack of shoulders on the expressway made the situation even more dangerous, contributing to the severity of the crash.
Despite the challenging weather conditions, emergency services worked quickly to clear the area, and the expressway was reopened by around 11 a.m. The Chicago Tribune reported that lake-effect snow was lingering over the city, creating hazardous road conditions, particularly near Lake Michigan.
Here are some of the images taken by Tim Olk at the scene:
These photos provide a powerful visual account of the chaos and damage caused by the severe weather and the resulting accident.
