3D printing theft - a new threat to global shipping

Security company G4S warned that criminal gangs are using cheaper and more accessible 3D printing technology, threatening the global shipping industry.

Law enforcement officials and industry experts said that they have found many uses of the technology for theft, and the stolen goods cover food, beverages, electronic products, household items and so on.

3D printing technology has existed since the 1980s. In just 10 minutes, thieves can forge security equipment, such as cargo seals, security locks, keys, etc.

After breaking into the container and stealing the item, the thief will replace the seal with a 3D printed copy to cover up his whereabouts, making it difficult to find out exactly when and where they were stolen.

Robert Dodge, senior vice president of risk services at G4S, said: "We want to make sure people are wary of new threats that may arise. Some customers related to supply chain security projects are sharing information with their business partners who use high security seals."
“In response, the US Customs and Border Protection welcomes us to share information that poses a threat to business.”

3D printing technology can reduce costs, and the operation process does not require any professional knowledge. For criminals, the production of fake and shoddy security products is simpler than ever before.

Robert Dodge explains: “You can buy a 3D scanner for a few hundred dollars, and you don't need to know computer-aided design (CAD), it saves a lot of trouble. It not only provides the size of the item, but also creates CAD. Near-perfect replica of the specification."

To help solve the problem of criminal gangs using 3D printing technology to steal, G4S has issued warnings to customers, crew and terminal guards providing supply chain security services and advised the shipping industry to respond to increasing threats.

The G4S recommendations include:
• Individual companies need to conduct professional, third-party safety assessments of the goods being transported
? A background check on company employees is required
Analyze transportation methods to determine alternative transportation routes and delivery times
Avoid placing company logos on company-owned containers
? Randomly place GPS devices in the shipment
• Install a sensor, network camera in the container to capture the lens when the box is opened
• The seal uses a replaceable color to change its color from time to time, making it difficult to produce replicas.
