In 2009, after the international financial crisis, a large amount of low-priced methanol entered the Chinese market. In the first half of this year, there were 3.4 million tons of imports, which was equivalent to 2.37 times last year.
At present, domestic methanol is mostly used for the production of formaldehyde, acetic acid, dimethyl ether raw materials, while the use of imported methanol is also limited to this, to a certain extent, diverted the downstream market demand for methanol in the domestic market. Affected by the above factors, in May this year, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce conducted anti-dumping investigations on imported methanol originating in Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Indonesia and New Zealand.
In spite of this, as the demand in foreign markets continues to shrink, there is still a large number of imported methanol with low cost advantages imported into the country. Some research institutions have proposed that taking into account the demand for ethylene and propylene in the southeastern coastal chemical industry park, methanol-to-olefin MTO or methanol-to-propylene (MTP) units can be constructed in the coastal chemical park through imported methanol.
