Approach Angle

The approach angle is a critical measurement that determines how well a vehicle can navigate obstacles without damaging its undercarriage. It refers to the maximum angle between the horizontal plane and the imaginary plane that touches the front tire's outer edge when the vehicle is under static load. Any fixed components in front of the front axle must not extend below this plane, ensuring safe passage over rough terrain.

When it comes to off-road vehicles, the approach angle plays a vital role in determining their overall capability. A higher approach angle means the vehicle can tackle steep inclines or obstacles more effectively. For example, the Hummer has an impressive ground clearance of 11.5 inches, resulting in an approach angle of 51 degrees. This, combined with powerful engine performance, makes it ideal for military and extreme off-road use. Other SUV manufacturers are also focusing on increasing this angle to enhance their vehicles' off-road performance.

But does the approach angle matter for regular cars? Absolutely. Even though most drivers don't venture off-road often, unexpected road conditions like potholes or uneven surfaces can still pose challenges. The Citroën C5 exemplifies how advanced suspension systems can adapt to these situations. Its third-generation hydraulic suspension automatically adjusts the vehicle's height based on speed and road conditions. At speeds above 110 km/h, the front and rear suspensions lower by 15mm and 11mm respectively, while at lower speeds, the car raises itself by 20mm to handle rough roads more smoothly. This dynamic adjustment helps maintain a better approach angle depending on the situation.

On the other hand, smaller vehicles like the Maruti Alto (with an approach angle of around 28 degrees) or the Tata Sumo (approximately 26 degrees) struggle on uneven roads. In poor road conditions, they may become stuck or suffer damage due to limited clearance. That’s why it’s essential for all vehicles, whether off-road or on-road, to have a sufficient approach angle for safer and smoother driving experiences.

In conclusion, a larger approach angle significantly reduces the risk of scraping or damaging the underbody when driving over obstacles, whether on or off the road. It enhances the vehicle's ability to pass through challenging terrain, making it a crucial factor in both off-road performance and everyday driving safety.

Side Step

Car side pedal
The appearance design of the car side pedal usually matches the overall style of the car and can enhance the beauty of the vehicle. Its shape and lines can be integrated with the body lines to make the vehicle look fuller and more majestic, or it can show the vehicle's sportiness or off-road style.

Easy to get on and off
For taller SUVs, off-road vehicles and other models, side steps provide convenient access for passengers, especially the elderly, children and people of shorter stature, to get on and off the vehicle. It reduces the height difference between getting on and off the vehicle, allowing passengers to enter and exit the vehicle more easily and reducing the risk of falling caused by difficulties in getting on and off the vehicle.

Protect the car body
When the vehicle is driving, the side pedals can play a role in protecting the vehicle body. When the vehicle has a slight scratch with obstacles on the roadside or other vehicles, the side pedals will often contact the collision object first, thereby reducing the direct impact on the side of the vehicle body and reducing the damage to the vehicle body. In addition, the side pedals can also prevent mud, water, sand and stones from splashing onto the vehicle body, keeping the vehicle body clean.

Enhance vehicle appearance coordination
The design of the car side pedals usually considers matching the overall shape of the vehicle, which can add a sense of stability and grandeur to the vehicle. Different styles of side pedals can adapt to the styles of different models. Whether it is a sports, luxury or off-road vehicle, you can find a side pedal that matches it to enhance the overall aesthetics of the vehicle.

Diverse materials highlight individuality
The materials of the side pedals include stainless steel, aluminum alloy, plastic, etc. Stainless steel side pedals have a bright appearance and high strength, giving people an impression of being sturdy and durable; aluminum alloy side pedals are relatively light, and have good corrosion resistance and a stylish appearance; plastic side pedals are low in cost and can be selected in a variety of colors, providing car owners with more personalized choices.
