Scientists create compact and inexpensive "fluorometer" oil sensor

[China Instrument Network Instrument Development] It is well-known that oil is an important resource and it is related to national economy and people's livelihood. Oil will inevitably encounter leakage problems during mining and use. The earlier the oil spill is known, the sooner it can take measures to avoid the leakage of oil.
Previously, scientists have proposed an ultraviolet-induced fluorescence-based oil spill monitoring method, but this method is very expensive and requires a very fragile spectrometer. And now scientists from Vigo University in Spain have created a compact and inexpensive oil sensor. This sensor is mounted on a buoy and can detect oil spills in advance and even determine the type of oil.

This simple but durable "fluorometer", where inexpensive LEDs are used as UV light sources, four photodiodes are used to measure different areas of the fluorescence spectrum, and each photodiode is equipped with differently colored cellophane filters so it can Record different signals. The device also includes a microcontroller and a radio module for sending readings.

In laboratory tests, this system was used to simulate the detection of oil leaks. The instrument can distinguish three types of crude oil and two types of oil refining. Scientists now plan to test technology in actual outdoor waters. They will also record the "fluorescent fingerprints" of other types of oil so that the system can also identify them.
“Our devices can help keep track of and control pollution by detecting potential sources of pollution,” said project leader Jose R. Salgueiro. “Once pollution occurs, it will help quickly identify problems and determine the nature of the oil pollution. And helps to respond faster."
The results of this study were recently published in Applied Optics.
